Everyone is human. You'll find out that love can be absurdly cruel if it chooses to be, no matter how strong or interesting you are. It's important to realise that, but with the wisdom of hindsight, it becomes clear that if this one person was never in your life then everything would be different. To make matters worse, love hurts. If you're not careful enough, you could end up losing yourself along with this person because of these terrible emotions. That's why it's important for everyone to learn what they need to know about love instead of making mistakes which will keep them clueless for their entire lives... The film is set in the 1970s, in Mumbai and also in Paris. The film begins in Paris where Sanjay (Kunal Kapoor) and Nancy (Alia Bhatt) are honeymooning and partying. After a night of partying, Sanjay takes Nancy to a movie theatre where she sees an unreleased movie, "Jagga Jasoos" which is based on the life of Javed Iqbal (Ranveer Singh). Seeing the movie's trailer, Nancy falls in love with Javed instantly and decides to learn about him. Javed and Sanjay meet for the first time and become friends instantly. Javed and Nancy become close, and after a while, they fall in love. Javed tells Nancy that he loves her through his songs. Nancy also confesses her love to Javed through another song composed by him. After this, Sanjay falls in love with Anita (Anushka Sharma), who pretends to be a fan of his music but is actually after his money. On Javed's birthday he plans a surprise party for Nancy which fails when Nancy sees Sanjay there with Anita. This upsets her and she leaves immediately, returning to Paris a few days later without informing anyone about what happened in Mumbai. Sanjay, Javed and Anita decide to find Nancy and Sanjay decides to meet her in Paris. He spends a lot of time trying to find her but gets drunk and dances with another girl. He wakes up the next morning and doesn't realise that his phone's battery has died and so can not call Nancy. They notice that Nancy is missing from their hotel after she never returned from the set. Javed goes out to get her but gets arrested by police officers after he doesn't pay the cab driver for his services. Sanjay meanwhile tries to meet her at her place, but she isn't there either. He decides to go out with Anita instead. Meanwhile, Nancy has fallen in love with Kamal (Lubna Azmat), a French man who is swimming in the Seine river. She learns about his home country, Pakistan, through her research on him, and writes him letters. He writes back that he loves her too but will never be able to leave France due to security issues. Nancy confronts Kamal after learning that he has been lying to her about his background.
